Renesas Electronics launches its first Wi Fi 6 and Wi Fi/Low Energy Bluetooth (LE) combination for IoT and smart home applications

Post on Jan 01,1970

The new dual band solution is based on Renesas' low-power RA MCU architecture and supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands

On December 10, 2025, Beijing, China - Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723), a global semiconductor solutions provider, announced today the launch of the RA6W1 dual band Wi Fi 6 wireless microcontroller (MCU), as well as the RA6W2 microcontroller that integrates Wi Fi 6 and low-power Bluetooth (LE) technology. These connectivity solutions are designed to meet the growing demand for always on, ultra-low power IoT devices in smart home, industrial, medical, and consumer applications. Renesas is also launching fully integrated modules with built-in antennas, wireless protocol stacks, and pre validated radio frequency (RF) connectivity, which helps accelerate the product development process.

Ultra low power technology supports always online IoT scenarios

Current IoT devices must always remain connected to improve application availability and response speed, while also balancing low-power operation to extend battery life or meet environmental regulations. Renesas' Wi Fi 6 MCU has features such as Target Wake Time (TWT), which can effectively extend device sleep time without affecting cloud connectivity and overall power consumption. This feature is crucial for applications such as environmental sensors, smart locks, thermostats, surveillance cameras, and medical monitors, which typically have strict requirements for real-time control, remote diagnostics, and over the air (OTA) updates.

Both MCUs are optimized for ultra-low power operation, with power consumption as low as 200nA to 4 μ A in sleep mode and less than 50 μ A in transmission flow indication message (DTIM10) mode. With the "sleep connection" Wi Fi function, these products can maintain a connected state at ultra-low power consumption, meeting increasingly stringent modern energy efficiency standards.

Scalable RA MCU architecture with comprehensive software support

Two MCUs are built on the Arm Cortex-M33 CPU core with a running frequency of 160MHz, equipped with 704KB SRAM, enabling engineers to develop cost-effective and independent IoT applications using integrated communication interfaces and analog peripherals without the need for additional MCU support. Customers can also choose Renesas' extensive RA series MCU as the main control unit, and design RA6W1 and RW6W2 as connection and network expansion modules. Both RA6W1 and RA6W2 can be used in conjunction with Renesas Flexible Configuration Package (FSP) and e2 Studio integrated development environment. As the first Wi Fi MCU in the RA product portfolio, it provides a scalable platform that supports seamless software reuse across the entire RA product family.

High performance dual band Wi Fi 6 supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections

Both MCUs support 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands, with excellent throughput, low latency, and low power consumption characteristics. The dual band function dynamically selects the optimal frequency band based on real-time network conditions, maintaining stable and high-speed connections even in multi device connection scenarios. The introduction of advanced technologies such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) and Target Wake Time (TWT) has further improved its performance and energy efficiency, making this solution particularly suitable for high-density urban environments and battery powered equipment.

Powerful security performance and Matter certified interoperability

The RA6W1 and RA6W2 products are equipped with multiple advanced security features, including AES-256 encryption, secure boot, key storage, true random number generator, and XiP technology that supports real-time decryption, effectively preventing unauthorized data access. The RA6W1 has been certified by the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), which helps developers design forward-looking products. In addition, the device has completed Matter protocol adaptation and passed Matter 1.4 certification, making it compatible with various smart home platforms. Renesas provides support for these two MCUs and modules through a long-term support plan, with MCU support period of 15 years and module support period of 10 years.

Chandana Pairla, VP of the Connectivity Solutions Division at Renesas We provide customers with flexible design options, allowing them to choose between using standalone Wi Fi devices, Wi Fi/Low Energy Bluetooth (LE) combination solutions, or fully integrated modules based on their actual needs. These wireless solutions help save power, simplify system design, and reduce BOM costs. By supporting both master and non master deployment modes, customers can confidently embark on the journey of wireless access design and seamlessly integrate it into the next generation of interconnected systems. ”

Two modules - Wi Fi 6 module (RRQ61001) and Wi Fi/Bluetooth LE combination module (RRQ61051) - significantly simplify the design process by integrating RF components and wireless connection protocol stacks that comply with global network certification standards. The RF certification standards it supports cover the United States (FCC), Canada (IC), Brazil (ANATEL), Europe (CE/RED), the United Kingdom (UKCA), Japan (Telec), South Korea (KCC), Chinese Mainland (SRRC) and Taiwan (NCC). By integrating connectivity functions at the system level, this series of modules effectively reduces design complexity and assists in the product launch process.
