Shanghai, China, December 8, 2025- SIX: AMS, a global leader in lighting and sensing innovation, announced today that it has partnered with Zumtobel Group to develop a plastic reel replacement solution for transporting LED light strips and electronic components - using paper reels for transportation. This paper reel can significantly improve environmental performance indicators, achieving a weight reduction of over 33% and a carbon dioxide reduction of over 75%. This new reel solution will not incur additional costs and marks an important milestone for the electronics industry to build a sustainable supply chain.
Compared to plastic reels, paper reels have multiple technological advantages: plastic reels weigh 217 grams, while paper reels weigh only 140 grams, achieving a weight reduction of approximately 35%. Plastic reels produce approximately 1.075 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions during raw material mining, production, manufacturing, and waste disposal, while paper reels only produce 203 grams, a decrease of about 80%. Some areas even impose disposal fees on plastic waste, while paper materials have higher recyclability and biodegradability.
Quantitative benefits indicate that if AMS Osram replaces over 500000 plastic reels with paper reels each year, it can achieve an annual reduction of 108 tons of plastic and 436 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time, the annual transportation weight can be reduced by 38.5 tons. This paper reel solution not only reduces logistics costs and waste disposal expenses, but also reduces carbon emissions throughout the entire supply chain from production to waste disposal.
Integration of sustainability and industrial applicability
This paper reel meets the strict standards of LED manufacturing and product safety in terms of structural stability, operational processability, and cleanliness control. After a series of large-scale tests, AMS Osram and Audemars Piguet Group have confirmed that paper reels are comparable in performance parameters to plastic reels. This paper reel solution maintains the same production efficiency and form stability on industry standard surface mount technology (SMT) production lines (automated production lines used for high-precision mounting of electronic components onto printed circuit boards). The control of particle dispersion has also been verified and meets the particle safety regulations of clean rooms. In addition, the electronic component loading capacity of the paper reel design is exactly the same as that of the plastic reel.
Innovation strength comes from trust and collaboration
Martin Bachler, Head of Sustainability at Amex Osram, said, "Paper reels are the result of trust based collaboration with our project partner, the Audemars Piguet Group, and are mainly driven by our team in Malaysia. To improve environmental benefits, we must break through traditional standards, which requires open thinking and technological courage
Bernhard Apsner, Senior Director of Global Technology Procurement at Audemars Piguet Group, stated, "Collaborating with AMS Osram to develop sustainable paper reels once again confirms that sustainable development is a systematic project that requires collaboration. We are proud to lead this project and jointly develop a resource optimized packaging solution, which aligns with Audemars Piguet's sustainable development strategy, drives us to gradually transform into a sustainable enterprise, and inspires us to work with customers and partners to shape a green future
Through deep collaboration, AMS Osram and Audemars Piguet Group have transformed concepts into market-oriented solutions. At present, paper reels have entered the advanced pilot stage and have successfully passed customer qualification certification.
Sustainable solution for zero cost upgrade
The material and manufacturing cost of plastic and paper reels are comparable, but in logistics transportation and waste disposal, paper reels can save costs and form long-term advantages. This plan significantly optimizes core sustainability indicators such as carbon footprint, material utilization, and waste management, helping customers meet ESG compliance requirements.
2026 Frankfurt International Lighting and Building Technology Exhibition Realistic Experience Paper Scroll
This paper reel is a benchmark project for sustainable packaging solutions in the LED industry. The large-scale application and extension plan for product lines such as automotive components has entered the planning stage. Simultaneously promote the upgrading of the recycling system to fully implement the concept of circular economy.
From March 8th to 13th, 2026, at the International Lighting and Building Exhibition (Light+Building) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, AMS Osram will showcase the paper reel transportation solution to professional audiences for the first time.
Aimes Osram relies on over 250 patent assets to protect over a hundred innovative achievements, all of which are closely related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12): "Responsible Consumption and Production".
