Melexis launches the world's first automotive grade surface mount infrared temperature sensor

Post on Jan 01,1970

On November 19, 2025, Belgium's Thyssendro Hamm - Global microelectronics engineering company Melexis announced the launch of the world's first surface mount SMD device designed specifically for temperature monitoring needs of key components in electric vehicle (EV) powertrain applications - MLX90637, further expanding its far infrared (FIR) temperature sensor product line. This product successfully combines the advantages of automated SMD packaging with high-precision non-contact temperature sensing technology, and is introduced for application in the automotive field.

The MLX90637 is designed specifically for critical temperature monitoring applications in electric vehicles (EVs), such as inverters, motors, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. In these applications, the speed and accuracy of readings are crucial for the operation of the vehicle. Although thermistors (NTC) have been widely used in these systems for a long time, surface mount FIR MLX90637 exhibits superior overall performance in multiple aspects.

With the help of MLX90637, car manufacturers can further simplify their production processes. The sensor adopts surface mount SMD packaging, supports PCB based automated assembly, and eliminates the common manual operation steps in NTC solutions. In the application of electric vehicles, the electrical isolation characteristics of MLX90637 help effectively isolate high and low voltage circuits, thereby improving safety; And its good electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) can also suppress the typical noise interference problem caused by NTC cables. In addition, the sensor has a wide working environment temperature range (-40 ℃ to 125 ℃), which can maintain stability in harsh automotive operating environments and help extend its service life.

In application scenarios that require strict temperature control, such as monitoring inverter busbars, the MLX90637, with its 50 ° field of view, 0.02 ℃ measurement resolution, and fast response time, jointly ensures that the vehicle can fully utilize its performance while avoiding damage caused by temperature issues. In addition to significant performance advantages, the FIR MLX90637 sensor also has cost advantages compared to NTC thermistors by adopting SMD packaging design. This sensor not only helps to save assembly time, but also is more economical compared to TO-CAN alternatives at the component level.

In terms of system integration, the MLX90637 sensor also performs well. It is powered by 3.3V, supports factory calibration (including calibration post-processing), has an I2C interface for communication with the host microcontroller (including software configurable I2C addresses defined through external pins), and combined with a compact 3mm x 3mm package, it helps simplify the overall system integration process.

As the world's first surface mount far-infrared temperature sensor certified for automotive use, the launch of MLX90637 marks another important breakthrough for Mindray in the field of temperature sensors, "said Joris Roels, Mindray's market manager." MLX90637 not only improves system reliability and enhances safety performance, but also effectively simplifies assembly processes. Mailaixin looks forward to helping car manufacturers deliver electric vehicles that meet higher performance and safety standards through this solution. ”

With the continuous evolution of the automotive industry, the MLX90637 embodies McLaren's commitment to innovation, supporting the automotive industry towards a more electric, intelligent, and sustainable future.
