Renesas Electronics uses next-generation power semiconductors to power its 800 volt DC AI data center architecture

Post on Jan 01,1970

On October 14, 2025, Beijing, China - Renesas Electronics (TSE: 6723), a global semiconductor solutions provider, announced its support for NVIDIA's 800 volt DC power architecture for efficient power conversion and distribution, driving the development of the next generation of smarter and faster artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

With GPU driven AI workloads becoming increasingly intensive, data center power consumption has climbed to the hundreds of megawatts level, and modern data centers urgently need power architectures that combine energy efficiency optimization and scalability. GaN FET switches, represented by wide bandgap semiconductors, are rapidly becoming a key solution due to their faster switching speed, lower energy loss, and excellent thermal management performance. In addition, GaN power devices will drive the development of 800V DC busbars in the rack, significantly reducing distribution losses and decreasing the demand for large-sized busbars while supporting 48V component reuse through DC/DC buck converters.

Renesas' GaN based power solutions are particularly suitable for such application scenarios, supporting efficient and dense DC/DC power conversion, with a working voltage range covering 48V to 400V, and can be optionally stacked up to 800V. These converters are based on LLC DC transformer (LLC DCX) topology and can achieve up to 98% conversion efficiency. In the AC/DC front-end, Renesas uses bidirectional GaN switches to simplify rectifier design and improve power density. Meanwhile, Renesas' REXFET MOSFETs, drivers, and controllers provide a powerful supplement to the Bill of Materials (BOM) for the new DC/DC converter. Zaher Baidas, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Power at Renesas, stated that "AI is changing industries at an unprecedented pace, and power infrastructure must evolve rapidly and synchronously to meet the surging demand for electricity. Relying on our full range of GaN FET, MOSFET, controller, and driver product portfolios, Renesas is committed to empowering the future of AI with high-density energy solutions for large-scale applications. These innovations not only bring excellent performance and energy efficiency, but also have the scalability needed to support future growth. ”

Renesas Electronics has released a white paper that delves into its device topology for supporting 800V power distribution in AI infrastructure.
