Advanced high-precision temperature sensors from Ames Osram assist in animal health management

Post on Jan 01,1970

Shanghai, China, July 18, 2025- Leading global provider of intelligent sensing and transmitter solutions, ams (SIX: AMS), announced today the launch of a compact temperature sensor - AS6211- that can monitor the internal conditions of cows and reveal information that cannot be observed externally. This sensor is built into the smaXtec intelligent bio capsule sensor, which can detect physiological changes in the early stages and assist farmers in monitoring livestock health.

For organisms, changes in internal temperature are one of the early signals of health problems. In livestock management, continuous temperature monitoring is an important means of livestock health management, which can make timely responses before the appearance of obvious symptoms. For this purpose, the intelligent biological capsule developed by Austrian company smaXtec is equipped with a high-precision AS6221 temperature sensor from AMS Osram. This can help detect abnormalities in livestock early and provide targeted treatment, reducing the need for medication. This not only improves the level of livestock health management, but also achieves proactive herd management.

This intelligent biological capsule is delivered by swallowing during cow feeding. After entering the body, it will remain in the rumen for a long time. The rumen, as a component of the multi chambered stomach in ruminants, provides a stable environment for precise and long-term temperature measurement. The smaXtec intelligent biological capsule is approximately 10.5 centimeters long and 3.5 centimeters in diameter, and its size is comparable to large vitamin supplements commonly used in cattle and horses. The core component used in this product is the AMS Osram AS6221 temperature sensor, which is only slightly larger than a grain of rice but can achieve precise measurement. Its extremely low power consumption can enable continuous operation in animal bodies for many years without the need for replacement.

This intelligent biological capsule supports automatic temperature data collection every ten minutes. After the collection is completed, the data is transmitted wirelessly to the smaXtec system for analysis and evaluation. In addition to identifying fever and metabolic disorders, the sensor can also accurately track the water intake status of animals, indicating their health status through a brief decrease in rumen temperature. The AMS Osram AS6221 temperature sensor can detect such fluctuations with an accuracy of ± 0.09 ° C, providing support for comprehensive health monitoring.

Manuel Frech, head of embedded systems at smaXtec, emphasized, "With the help of the AS6221 temperature sensor from AMS Osram, our intelligent bio capsule sensor can accurately and continuously monitor the temperature inside the rumen of cows. This allows us to detect changes in the health of cows on average five days in advance. Therefore, we can help customers respond faster, reduce drug use, and improve livestock health management more effectively. ”Heat stress can also be detected early - as temperatures rise, the importance of such monitoring becomes increasingly prominent, and this advantage is particularly significant.
